A Clean Makeup Brush is a Vital Part of Healthy Skin

Makeup is a simple and important daily ritual for many women. The most important tool for creating flawless look is the brush. Proper use of the brush will ensure a perfect look, however, what is often overlooked yet essential is to clean your brush regularly. A clean brush is not only important to your health, but it will also further enhace the appearence of your makeup, helping you achieve your best look.

Here’s an interesting poll conducted by allure.com (published in Allure Magazine – July 2011), 45% of women surveyed NEVER clean their makeup brushes! Most women don’t even realize their brushes do in fact need to be cleaned.

Keeping your makeup brush clean is a vital step to ensure hygiene and maintaining healthy skin. A dirty brush is full of bacteria, which transfers to your face causing breakouts, blemishes or even spreading infection. Bacteria will clog pores and lead to breakouts. Would you eat from a dirty dish? Absolutely not! The same applies to your cosmetic brush.

It is very important to sanitize and disinfect makeup brushes, not only to obtain the best look possible, but to extend the life of your brush by preserving the life of the bristles. It’s best to clean your brushes once a week, but this realistically depends on how much or how often you use them.

The cleaning process takes only a short while and is easy:

A) Wet the bristles of the brush with warm water
B) Distribute an anti-bacterial soap or use a gentle bar soap (better without fragrance) and swirl the bristles of the brush in the soap. Use your fingers to massage the soap into the bristles. Repeat until you remove all traces of makeup.
C) Rinse the brush until the water runs completely clean of soap.
D) Pat the brushes dry with a clean cloth to remove any excess water. Be gentle to avoid breaking the bristles. Shape the brush while it’s still wet.
E) Finally let your brushes air dry to preserve their softness. For brushes with a long handle you can place them on a clean surface (such as a paper towel) or in a cup. For kabuki brushes simply place them on a flat surface.

Remember, cleaning your makeup brush is very important for the health and welfare of your skin and will keep your complexion free of additional blemishes and breakouts.
